I want to expand more on the different spiritual strongholds that Satan uses against the children of God. In the midst of your circumstances, have you asked questions like; what have I done to deserve this pain? Why is God silent about these strongholds? Am I ever going to be free from strongholds? By virtue of our predisposition to sin, we find many people walking through life with various strongholds. The only place to find answers to these questions is the word of God (Hosea 4:6). I got to understand that God does not tempt anyone (James 1:13) instead, he allows certain temptations to come in order to test our faith.
The real master of temptation is Satan. His modus operandi is to make us believe that he does not exist and why would a God of love allow him to exist to cause us pain. This is the highest form of deception and many people, including believers and preachers, are eating it up. Most people think because they do not discuss God or Satan, they are free and living their best lives. The truth is, “if you are not living in Christ, you are definitely in Satan’s stronghold”. Satan is angry, possessive and has a personal vendetta against us (Revelation 12:12). He is looking for vulnerable people to mislead and bring into bondage (1 Peter 5:8).
Are you familiar with scenarios like; you study for exams but blank out each time you are seated to write, you fall sick every time you get a job interview, you find reasons to want to divorce your spouse, you constantly get an urge to start a fight, you can’t seem to control your sexual desires around the opposite sex, you experienced physical and sexual abuse time and time again, one glass of wine turns into bottles, the nightmares never seem to go away, you can’t sleep at night, you earn money but never seem to understand how it got lost, you are continually fearful when you are alone, you start something and never finish it etc. This might ring a bell to some and sound like gibberish to others but I urge you to open your ears and eyes because we are in the last days.
How do we go through these things but never make the connection to spiritual strongholds? It is important to know that Satan has agents who do his bidding and the Bible calls them demons. These demons are angels that sided with Satan to rebel against God and have continued to war against humans for eons. Many do not believe that demons exist but I tell you they are just as real as you and I but unseen. Demons tend to occupy our physiological and physical space; hence we develop wrong thought patterns (anxiety, fear, hopelessness, jealousy, hate, addictions and offence).
I want you to live a victorious life and this is not about earning more money or any material stuff. I am talking about freedom in your inner man that comes from a continuous walk with God to which Satan has no power over. When our thought patterns are altered, we give access to these demons to build strongholds. In order to cast down or break these strongholds, we must know how they gained access to our lives.
Demons are very subtle, and one way through which they gain access into our lives is through generational curses. These curses are passed down from one generation to the next as a result of one’s choice to rebel against God. When you look at your family line and you continuously notice divorce, physical and sexual abuse, untimely deaths, financial mismanagement, addictions, certain types of illness, uncontrolled sexual appetite and other ungodly patterns then there is a generational curse going on.
I did not meet my grandfather but my father has an unhealthy sexual appetite for women and the money he makes never served a purpose for the family but was wasted on this lifestyle. The choices my father made allowed demons access into his life, the stronghold was built and my family was torn apart. Same things happened with my uncle and we continued to see a decline in progress. My father rebelled against God by sleeping with another woman, whom most of the time are demons disguised as humans. Just as God warned Cain (Genesis 4:7), I am reminding you that “sin is crouching at your door and it desires to control you but you must rule over it”. I have seen too much of the demonic activities and that is why I am sounding this alarm.
For many years, Satan tried to manipulate my thoughts into thinking that I am exactly like my father. I would sometimes have dreams where so many people engaged in excessive drinking and sexual activity. The demons thought to themselves, if we can’t get her to engage in sexual activities, let us destroy her mentally and cause her to hate men. Each time I was attacked by a man, their eyes would turn deep red and only the name of Jesus brought them back to their senses. If not for Jesus, my thought process would begin to align with their plans and I would be lost.
Another example is a family that experiences the death of men at age 40. Their male children never live past the age of 40 because their dead great grandfather worshipped a certain goddess (demon) who did him a favor in exchange for sacrificing his entire male lineage once they hit 40. Satan never gives for free. He will make you feel like the greatest person on the planet but once it is time to collect, he is merciless. The curse was broken in the 5th generation because one of the male heirs dedicated his life to living and obeying God.
Can a true believer be bound to these generational curses and consequences? NO. It is important to know that throughout the Bible, God is consistent. The Old Testament says in Exodus 20:4-6 “You shall not make for yourself any idol or any likeness of what is in heaven or on earth as an object to worship. You shall not bow down to them or serve them, for I the Lord your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and the fourth generation of those who hate me but showing graciousness and steadfast loving kindness to thousands of generations of those who, love me and keep my commandments”. I want you to mark the last part which points to those who hate God (rebellion) and those who love and obey God. The New Testament tells us in Romans 8:1-2 says “Therefore there is now no condemnation [no guilty verdict, no punishment] for those who are in Christ Jesus [who believe in Him as personal Lord and Savior]. For the law of the Spirit of life [which is] in Christ Jesus [the law of our new being] has set you free from the law of sin and of death”.
“The one thing that resonates in both testaments is that obedience to God frees us from spiritual bondage”.
Irrespective of the skeletons in your ancestor’s closets, you are the one with the choice to make. The children of Israel were stubborn and continuously blamed their mistakes on their fathers. Like you and I, they keep missing the part where God says we must love and keep his commandments. As a result, God reiterates again to Ezekiel and Jeremiah that everyone is responsible for their own actions. No longer will the phrase “The fathers eat sour grapes (father’s sin) and the children’s teeth are set on edge (children suffer consequences)” be used as an excuse (Ezekiel 18:1-3; Jeremiah 31:29-30). You may have inherited a family curse or it started with you, the good news is that God has already made a way to break that cycle. Christ through his shed blood has redeemed us from the curse of the law and whom he sets free, is free indeed (John 8:36; Galatians 3:13-14).
Although we are susceptible to sin because of the fall of Adam, we are victorious over sin because of Jesus Christ (1 Corinthians 15:21). Let us stay away from situations that will cause us to open doors to demonic curse. God tells us in Ezekiel 18:9 “if he walks in my statutes and [keeps] my ordinances so as to act with integrity; [then] he is [truly] righteous and shall certainly live”. We must make that conscious decision to live according to God’s standards if we are to live free. Have you seen the way dead bodies attract blowflies? In the same way, sin attracts demons and they cause your soul to rot.
The root of our problems (physical or psychological) begins in the spirit realm, so we must apply the word of God and surrender in total obedience in order to break the shackles of Satan. Our choices in life matter and when we make choices that lead to death, we set the stage for a long line of problems (curses or consequences of sin). Do not give Satan a foothold in your life, deny him access to your generations and close that door through the blood of Jesus. Amen.
Romans 10:13 says “For whoever calls on the name of the Lord [in prayer] will be saved”. If this is an area you are struggling with, please speak with your priest, pastor or spiritual counselor.
